Cognex Honor Grants
From Seed to Table
Irene Mancuso, Lisa Hayes, Lisa Ahearn, Lynda Simkins
Working cooperatively, the Natick Community Farm, the Bennett-Hemenway School, and the Wilson Middle School will create a joint program about health, nutrition, food production, and record keeping. Students will investigate and chart many factors involved in food growth, explore local farm history, and learn about health and nutritional benefits of different plant varieties.

Musical Sound Machines
Kris Hill, Kelli Connelly, and Shoshanah Starr
Based on knowledge gained through the study of simple machines, sound, and orchestral instruments, first and third graders at Lilja will work collaboratively to invent musical instruments. Students will use these instruments to produce musical responses to literature, create musical compositions, illustrate math concepts and patterns, and evoke mood.

Mini Grants
Classroom Aquarium Project
Ken Henderson, Wilson Middle School
This grant will supply freshwater aquarium and training to six non-science classrooms at Wilson. Students will be trained to conduct water tests and to perform generalaquarium maintenance. Students will keep maintenance records and will take responsibility and leadership roles in caring for the aquatic animals.

Wall of Achievement
Sheilah Bernard, Diane Verschure, Richard Kopelman
This program will recognize the achievements and contributions of Natick High School alumni to their professional and community organizations. These individuals will be invited back to Natick High to share their professional and personal life experiences with students and faculty alike.

Books for Teachers as Readers
Kirstin Sokol, Wilson
This program will focus on enjoyment of reading for students in grades seven through twelve. Participants will compare reactions to published book reviews, discuss ideas for teaching the book or using it in the curriculum, and explore the relevance of adding it to the school libraries.

Student Recognition Program
John Hughes and Sara Lane
This program will be used to recognize Kennedy students for their achievements and contributions to both the school and the community at large. In order to promote self-esteem, information about students' accomplishments will be highlighted.

Creating Music with Technology
Rosa Sterk, Marlene Taranto
This project is designed to provide music education using computer technology with a MIDI keyboard and sequencing software. Seventh grade students at Kennedy Middle School will participate in a composition project where they hear, read, play, and create their own compositions. They will publish and present an original composition guided by Ms. Taranto and Ms. Sterk.

Author Appreciation Center
Amy Gallagher Goodwin
In support of author studies and related learning units, a resource center holding author reference materials will be established to share among all elementary schools. The author appreciation center, which builds upon the popular author letter writing station, will house biographical material, author software, author videos, and audiotapes.

Science by Mail
Diane Holmes, Darlene Crawford
East School students will participate in a national, hands-on science program sponsored by the Boston Museum of Science. Students are paired with pen-pal scientists for one year. Curricular materials and experiments are provided in two activity packets and culminates with a "Big Challenge" in which students are encouraged to find creative solutions using the information they have learned from their partnership.

Arts Across America
Dianne Keough, Kris Hill, Ann Horton, Ben Hem
This project will enrich the fourth grade social studies curriculum at Ben-Hem with an infusion of both studio and performance arts. The grant will extend US regional studies to add experiences, which tie together the social studies curriculum, multicultural studies, women in history biographical studies and various art forms.

Let Your Fingers Do the Talking
Lisa Hayes and Jacquelyn Holt, Ben Hem
This program will teach American Sign Language to students in grades K and 3 at Ben-Hem. Activities will focus on basic vocabulary and conversational use within and between classrooms, and includes a partnership with Framingham Learning Center for Deaf Children.

Hands-on Family Math Mania and Scintillating Science
Margaret Donohoe, Lynnell Connolly, Betsy Mangan
This grant at Johnson Elementary School involves a series of math and science workshops during which games, challenges, puzzles, and activities provide creative ways for families to support math and science programs.
